At Canterbury Saunas, we’ve spent years exploring the sauna culture of northern Europe — learning its traditions, understanding its purpose, and sourcing products that bring that same authenticity home to New Zealand. We sauna regularly ourselves, so we know what works, what lasts, and what feels right.

The Tartu Sauna Cabin

  • Insulation: NZ wool blend insulation for natural thermal and acoustic performance

  • Walls: 178 mm thick

  • Air barrier: Magnesium oxide rigid sheet — breathable and moisture resistant

We design and build stylish sauna cabins for discerning homes and gardens. Our New Zealand–made cabins are

available in two internal sizes, each engineered to handle local conditions with ease. Choose from a range of custom upgrades

— from Wi-Fi-controlled or wood-burning heaters to ambient lighting and larger glass panels for panoramic views.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Finnish and infrared saunas?
Finnish saunas heat the air and stones to around 100 °C with gentle steam. Infrared saunas warm the body directly to about 60 °C with no steam.

Can I build the sauna myself?
No. Our saunas are built in Christchurch, pre-wired by a certified electrician, and supplied ready for delivery or collection.

Do I need consent?
Generally no, as our saunas are freestanding and under 10 m² — but check with your local council.

What is Thermowood?
Heat-treated NZ pine that’s stable, durable, and ideal for sauna conditions.

Are saunas safe for everyone?
Most people can enjoy sauna use, but avoid it if you have certain heart, blood pressure, or heat-related conditions.

How much does it cost to run?
A typical 1.5-hour session with a 6 kW heater costs around $2.50 in electricity.

Do you have a showroom?
Not currently — we keep costs down by working directly from our Canterbury base.

Shipping & Returns
Orders ship NZ-wide with tracking. Larger items travel by freight pallet or can be collected from Christchurch. Returns accepted within 30 days for unused items (return postage at sender’s cost)..
